A-HECK of a Summer 2022

A-HECK of a Summer (AHOS) provides an opportunity for high school students to experience career opportunities in health care by taking part in volunteer work at health care facilities in their community, and shadowing health care professionals. Through the three-week program students, earn a half of a Carnegie unit towards their High School Diploma. Over the three weeks, students engaged with various aspects of the medical industry including hearing from guest speakers, journaling, health care pathways, field trips and hand on activities like field trips and dissections leading to a final project and exam.

OHS Science Olympiad Team Goes Supernova!

The Opelousas High School Science Olympiad team was the 5th place overall team at the Louisiana State Science Olympiad tournament held at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, LA on Saturday, April 9.

OHS Writes of Spring Writing Contests Winners!

OHS Spanish students participated in the Lafayette Public Library’s 2022 Writes of Spring Writing Contest. We congratulate all the winners and recognize the efforts of all students who contributed their entries.

The winners from Opelousas High School are as follows:
• Tyler Thibodeaux: 1st place 11-12 grade Spanish fiction for “Steve”
• Michael Hammond: 2nd place in 11-12 grade Spanish fiction for “Visiones”
• Mikaiyla Alfred: 3rd place in 11-12 grade Spanish fiction for “El primer día del cambio”
• Abdulrahman Swati: 1st place in 11-12 grade Spanish personal narrative for “Perder a un amigo”
• Madison Melancon: 2nd place in 11-12 grade Spanish personal narrative for “él me transformó"
• Maya Jackson: 3rd place in 11-12 grade Spanish personal narrative for “Ojalá lo supieras”
• Micha Thurman: 1st place in 11-12 grade Spanish poetry for “Mideo”
• Kobie Grant: 2nd place in 11-12 grade Spanish poetry for “Sueños”
• Naylya Prince: 3rd place in 11-12 grade Spanish poetry for “No tan dulces”

Students will be honored for their achievements and are invited along with family and friends at an awards ceremony on Saturday, May 7th at 1:00 PM at Main Library, Downtown.

Winners will be awarded a certificate and an anthology of the winning works at the awards ceremony.

Following the ceremony students will get the opportunity to hear about a career in writing from author Sarah Guillory who will talk about her writing process and journey as an author.
